Are You A Baseball Novice? Give This A Read!

Is baseball your favorite sport? Do you thrill to the crack of the bat and the roar of the crowd? Or are you puzzled by the difference between a ball and a strike? No matter how much, or how little, you know about the game, the following information will be very helpful to you.

Test out a few bat weights to find the one that’s right for you. If a bat is heavy, you’ll slow down your swing, but gain some power. Too slow, though, and you may never catch up with the pitches. You’ve got to strike the right balance, especially if you’ve got a flame thrower on the mound.

If you are trying out, always keep yourself professional and remember to show respect. Be polite and friendly as you meet other players and coaches. This will indicate that you have a sense of maturity.

Practice your defense. Sure pitching and batting get all of the glory, but being a great defensive player is worth just as much to your team. The ability to save a run is just as valuable as the ability to create a run. Both are needed to win ball games.

Make sure you use the proper grip when hitting a baseball. You should go with a “standard” grip. The middle knuckles of your hands should be on the bat. Make sure the bat is across the callus line of your fingers instead of the back of your palms. This grip betters quickness and bat speed.

Be aware of the location of each baseball player. Many collisions could be avoided by simply knowing where each player is at all times. When the players collide, they can get injured. Therefore, be aware of your surroundings.

Pick the right bat. Pick out one that is not too heavy for you. Beginners should use lighter bats. It is pretty rare to see someone swing a bat that is “too light” because there is a trick called “choking up” to make bats lighter. This involves placing hands about an inch or two up the bat.

Watch the batter when playing the outfield. Right handed batters often hit the ball towards the left. Left handed batters usually hit to the right field. Understanding this will help you to determine where the ball is probably going to head.

Ground balls will be affected by how the grass has been mowed. If the grass is cut into a certain pattern in the outfield, the ball may change course. By watching and learning how a ball reacts when they do roll along these lines, you’ll be better able to judge where the ball is going to stop.

To catch a fly ball that is going to land behind you, take a first step back with one foot so that you start heading to the place where the ball is going to land. If you step around with the other foot first, you slow yourself down, making it harder to get to the ball.

Don’t be afraid to get your uniform dirty. Baseball is a game played in grass and dirt. You aren’t playing to 100% if you come out of any game with your uniform as pristine as it was when you first put it on. Make it a goal to get as dirty as possible.

For the most part, gloves are now designed for a specific position. If you normally play one particular position, get a versatile glove custom made for that position. Try on different sizes until you find the one that fits best. Make sure the glove is well made from high-quality leather.

To prevent an interference call, stay put until the ball hits your glove. If there is a runner stealing, you can start rising while the pitch comes, but if you move forward and the batter hits your glove with his bat, he gets to go to first base.

Hold your mitt on top of your left knee to block your pitching signs from the third base coach. This will prevent anyone from stealing signs.

Many pitchers prefer a two seam fastball. With this type of fastball, the middle finger and index finger is placed on the seam of the baseball. The thumb is placed between the two seams at the bottom of the ball. This allows the ball to spin seamlessly through the air resulting in a fast ball.

If you are the pitcher and don’t like the signs your catcher is giving you when calling the game, make sure you get the pitch you want by shaking him off. If you and the catcher do not agree on the pitching signs that you want, someone will get frustrated.

To get the most out of your baserunning, always think about getting from first to third when the batter hits a single, particularly when it goes to right field. Instead of focusing on the location of the ball, listen to your third base coach’s instructions. He will tell you whether to stop at second or keep going at full speed to third.

To maintain safety when coaching first or third base, think about wearing a batting helmet. A foul ball that is hit sharply can get to you and knock you down before you know it. You don’t want to suffer a concussion, or worse, because of a random shot. Instead, be prepared.
